MUNICIPAL VULNERABILITY PREPAREDNESS & HAZARD MITIGATION PLANNING
Building Barnstable’s resilience to climate change & preparing for natural hazards
The Town of Barnstable is participating in the Commonwealth’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) program. This program provides support for towns in Massachusetts to plan for and implement projects that mitigate the impacts of climate change and natural hazards. Communities that complete the MVP program become certified as an "MVP community" and are eligible for State grant funding and other opportunities.
In conjunction with the MVP initiative, the Town will also be updating its local Hazard Mitigation Plan. The purpose of the plan is to safeguard the community from the impacts of storm events and natural hazards, by increasing our economic, social and environmental resiliency. The Hazard Mitigation Plan is drafted and reviewed by town officials and residents and then approved by the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
In undertaking this process, the Town hopes to raise awareness about the dangers posed from natural hazards and work with citizens to develop a comprehensive strategy to reduce or eliminate potential risks and allow the community to recover quickly after storm events.
We invite you to participate in this immersive one-day event to explore and prioritize climate hazard issues and resilience solutions.
