Why is the former owner’s name on my real estate tax bill?
The tax bill is mandated to be assessed to the owner of record as of the January lst assessment date for the fiscal year. It is very important for the
ownership changes and mail address updates to be submitted to the Assessors in writing at the time of closing. Copies of deeds to the Town from the
Barnstable County Registry of Deeds may be received many months after a transfer. Taxes are adjusted at the closing between the buyer and seller.
Property may also be transferred several times within a fiscal year.
Can I pay my tax bill by credit card?
At the present time, no. Town would need to have method to recover the cost of the credit card transaction. The interest rate on overdue accounts may
be lower than credit card interest rate.
Can you correct my mailing address on car excise bill
The Town of Barnstable cannot change these addresses. You need to notify the Registry of Motor Vehicles and your insurance company of any address
change immediately. If you do not receive an excise bill, contact the Tax Collector’s Office 862-4054.
My exemption does not show on my real estate bill
Exemptions are granted by the Board of Assessors based on state guidelines for qualified elderly, veterans, blind and applications need to be filed
each tax year. The dollar amount of the exemption would vary each tax year depending on the fire district charges. Check

Can I pay less than the real estate tax payment due?
Partial payments are accepted on real estate taxes and must be a minimum of ten (10) percent of the payment due. Any partial payment processed before
the due date would reduce the interest accruing on the unpaid balance.
